With a new found strategy, Nagato, through Pain, reached back out to "Madara" and with his help, intended to show the world devastating pain, enough so that no one would risk waging war for fear of witnessing that pain again.
Reanimating his friend through his Rinnegan abilities, Nagato chose to create the Six Paths of Pain and devote a different ability of the Rinnegan to each of the reanimated bodies.
Realizing Akatsuki's goal couldn't be met through their previous methods, now leader Nagato chose to take a different approach. Reeling from the attack, Hanzo, Danzo, and their allies left but injured his legs to the point he couldn't stand. As Yahiko fell to the ground, Nagato completely lost it and summoned the Gedo Mazou and its abilities to siphon away his enemy's life force. Nagato was repulsed by this, but Yahiko knew he wasn't destined to lead the Akatsuki and bring peace, so he ran into the kunai knife his friend was holding.

As soon as Yahiko and Nagato arrived they were surrounded by enemies and found out the only way Konan would be set free was if Yahiko took his own life. Eventually, the group was approached by Tobi, masquerading as the famed Madara Uchiha, and offered his services and help in their effort. This ideal helped draw more attention with the villagers, and soon dozens of ninja began to join and the group grew in strength and size. The group was first started by Yahiko and his two close friends, Nagato and Konan with the purpose of bringing peace to their war-torn nation, Amegakure.
